Kinship Care – Giving Children A Chance

The Nepal Youth Foundation is a partner that we at Soarway are proud to support. Their record of accomplishment over the past 25 years is an incredible story of service; of changing lives for Nepali children and especially of those from communities who were were often the least served.

In the aftermath of the earthquake, NYF is expanding its Kinship Care program. Its premise is simple but its impact is immeasurable. In Nepal, parents rely on extended family members to help care for their children. Community-based childcare is especially prevalent in rural villages where grandparents, aunts and other family members care for the children while parents work in the fields. Youngsters who lose their parents to an early death are typically raised by relatives in the village. But not every extended family has the resources to raise orphaned children; to pay school foods, to buy books, to stretch meager meals even further.

Kinship Care aims to help children remain with family members and, by helping to covers the child’s school expenses and living costs in households without the financial ability to support more children, they do exactly that. What would you choose for your child?  Family, or an institution?

NYF knows which choice they believe in and so does Soarway. Currently fifty children receive a Kinship Care scholarship but, in the aftermath of the devastating April earthquake, NYF is expanding Kinship Care to support up to 1,000 children. With a death toll of nearly 9,000 and more than 20,000 people seriously injured, thousands of children have been left with no one to care for them. NYF is stepping in to find family members willing to raise these children, and to provide the funds to cover their expenses. Soarway has already become a partner in this effort and with your support we can do even more!
